Social Media & SEO: 5 Ways Social Media Boosts SEO Results

Optimizing for search engines is one of the primary goals for modern business owners.

The commercialization of the internet created a tidal wave of commerce, and where there’s commerce there’s advertising and marketing.

In the blink of an eye the discourse changed from billboard vs newspaper, to google ads vs bing ads. Nowadays, one of the primary industry spheres is online marketing, particularly with regards to SEO and social media.

However, it can be overlooked, even for seasoned marketing veterans, that SEO and social media advertising go hand in hand, with one more often than not affecting the other.

It can be baffling to some to hear that the miasma of teenage angst and celebrity drama known as social media is, these days, an effective marketing tool that we have, due largely in part to a shift in two different paradigms: changes to social media advertising via cookies, and the customer/supplier interchange.

However it is incredibly important to remember that social media isn’t something that Google checks specifically in their indexation. You can’t just build a social media page and then expect rankings to come flooding in.

The Role Of Social Media In SEO

Imagine if Batman had to protect Gotham via written letter.

Not only would he be bombarded with hundreds of letters round the clock, but it would take him so much time to respond to threats. However the bat-signal shows Batman exactly when he’s needed.

This is weirdly exactly what happens between social media and SEO.

There are thousands of social media pages in cyberspace, and if Google or any search engine for that matter, had to crawl them all – Google wouldn’t be the powerhouse it is today.

But rather, by picking up on social signals concentrated around a single piece of content, Google is able to index more relevant pages, with greater speeds – a process that benefits you and them.

Something that’s important to remember about social media’s relationship to the SERPs is that it’s not merely having social media that makes the rankings go up – it’s the level of engagement it attracts.

“Engagement” is the fancy marketing term for “interaction”, and while Google doesn’t crawl every social media page of every business, it does take notice of the social signals gained from heavy levels of interaction.

Razzle Dazzle ‘em

Where consumers once were content to trust a product, now they want to trust a brand, a personality behind the product.

In other words, buying and selling has become more than a mere commercial interaction – it’s a social one too.

Hence, social media is now a sophisticated tool of mass communication, and using it well can have a direct impact on your business’ SEO performance.

Content Distribution

Content is key, that much is a fact. If you have a business and aren’t producing content then you’re missing out on a huge opportunity to both get your name out into the stratosphere, and generate a source of passive income.

The joys of content creation can be demonstrated beautifully through the YouTube channel, Lubuskie Centrum Czystości.

This channel focuses on the rug cleaning business of Polish entrepreneur, Jacob. Every day, Jacob uploads a video detailing a particularly impressive rug that he’s cleaned that day.

The videos show the entire process, including close ups, slow motion shots, and always end with a short breakdance routine on the shop floor.

Sounds weird right? Well, Jacob currently boasts over 600,000 subscribers globally.

By generating ad revenue from his video, Jacob makes extra money every time someone watches one of his videos, and based on his subscriber count, it’s far more likely that a video will be watched than won’t be.

However, Jacob also uses his YouTube to link to his instagram, where he posts pictures of himself at work and previews to the day’s YouTube post.

Not only can social media be utilized this way to create an opportunity to generate backlinks, but it helps create and expand an audience and build trust with that audience. Also, if people engage with your content the way they engage with Jacob’s rugs (seriously it’s really relaxing to watch), then you’ll quickly create a passive income stream to add to your revenue.

Plus your content makes you more accessible to search engines, increasing your ranks in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages). Furthermore, with 600,000 people potentially interacting with his website and searching his brand will only add credibility to his brand and make Google more likely to rank his website.

Create An Audience

We kind of made this point above, but it really is one of the key reasons to engage in social media marketing. Running your socials by posting regularly and promoting your products and services means that you’re meeting the social requirements of the current buyer/seller relationship.

People aren’t just interested in a quality product anymore, they’re interested in a quality brand. Just this week I spent about $10 more on a laptop bag than I was planning to, because the one that I bought was made from recycled materials! That told me that the brand making the bag aligned with my personal values, and therefore was worth the additional $10.

The point is you can’t buy brand loyalty, you can only create it, and the easiest way to do this is through social media marketing. Brands with loyal customers get better SEO rankings as they have higher interaction rates and brand searches which in turn creates, you guessed it, more customers.

Generate Rep and Authority

Social media gives you amazing control over your public relations. It’s not just about creating an audience, it’s about easily maintaining them. Posting questionnaires, responding directly to client complaints and reviews, promoting events and sales, making light-hearted behind-the-scenes content so your audience gets a look at who you are.

Social media truly streamlined and opened up communication between business owners and their customer base. Using this powerful tool of communication, you can answer questions, display your industry knowledge, and truly control your reputation in real time. A better reputation, and authoritative handle of industry knowledge ticks all the right boxes for Google.

Makes Content Immortal

Remember what we said earlier about making a passive income stream? Well if you’ve not heard of passive income before, it’s basically content you put out on the internet that stays on the internet permanently, allowing it to be accessed and engaged with indefinitely.

This means that with minimal effort from you, you’ve created a potentially inexhaustible supply of funds. One of the best things about social media marketing is that it turns any potentially profitable content into passive income.

Anything that an audience member can use to give you money is permanently accessible through your socials! You could be sitting pretty on a gold mine if you leverage your socials well enough.

When it comes to SEO however, having a lot of content out on the internet is a big old green flag to search engines, quickly asserting you as a source of information relevant to a particular demographic.

Makes You Stand Out

Can you see what the previous four points all have in common? They all involve you being the centre of attention. Not only is social media a great tool, but it’s also the primary method of showing off who you are.

As we specified earlier, people want a personality they can trust behind the product they buy, but they also understand that a brand is a conceptualization of certain goals and desires held by the person/people running the company.

Social media allows them to have everything they want, a brand, a personality, and a product. It’s win-win-win for everyone! But not only this, companies that are louder do better in the SERPs. The more attention you command, the more you’re likely to receive.

No Place For Silence

Businesses can’t afford to rely on outdated styles of marketing. Although print and traditional media will always have a place in the professional sphere, it simply can’t compete with the speed, ease of access, and constantly available nature of social media.

Not only does social media allow you to spread your business, but the effects it will have on your SEO are valuable, and undebatable.
